We_re starting off with an alleged billion dollar fraud scheme in New York City Prosecutors are calling it one of the largest and most brazen investment frauds ever Eila Adams joins us now with the story. Carli federal prosecutors have arrested top executives from New York-based hedge fund Platinum Partners for running a scheme that swindled investors out of nearly one billion dollars Company founder Mark Nordlicht and six others have been charged with various crimes connected to the scheme which started in 2012. Platinum quickly grew a reputation for exceptionally high returns with its largest fund paying out 17 percent annually. It seemed too good to be true and it was Court papers accuse Platinum execs of lying to clients about the value of funds they were managing and paying out favored customers ahead of others. The documents also allege that when the hedge fund started going south in 2015 Nordlicht contemplated fleeing the country. Being charged with financial negligence never looks good on a resume but doubly so when you_re the head of the International Monetary Fund IMF Chief Christine Lagarde_s future with the global organization is in jeopardy after a Paris court found her guilty in a 5-year investigation over a payout she made as French finance minister back in 2008. The surprise guilty verdict COULD have cost her a year in jail and a 13-thousand dollar fine. Instead it_s largely symbolic. IMF execs will meet in the near future to discuss her future with the agency. And China_s toxic smog problem has gone from bad to worse. Red alerts have been issued in at least 23 cities across the country this week with the government calling for the shutdown of roads and factories as well as cancelling hundreds of flights. Almost a ninth of the country is covered by the thick smog. On Monday evening in Beijing the air quality levels were slightly improved but were still EIGHT TIMES higher than the World Health Organization_s recommended maximum. Terminix Pest Control has agreed to pay out 10 MILLION dollars for using a banned chemical during a routine fumigation The Esmond family suffered seizures and unconsciousness when the company used a pesticide containing methyl bromide to treat the room below theirs. The chemical is considered highly toxic and has been BANNED for indoor use for more than 3 decades. The plea deal includes 8 million in criminal fines 1 million in restitution and 1 million towards community projects on the islands. Old Spice is facing a class action lawsuit after users reported receiving chemical burns Complaints have flooded social media with images showing rash-like redness in the underarm area. The 5 million dollar claim against parent company Proctor & Gamble names THIRTEEN Old Spice products including the popular Arctic Force High Endurance deodorant line. A spokesperson for the company has DENIED the claims and put the reactions down to alcohol sensitivity. And it_s good to be Google CEO Sundar Pichai. It_s been revealed that he made more than 100 MILLION dollars from the company in 2015. The figures were released in a regulatory filing and include his base salary of 650 thousand plus another 99 point 8 million in restricted company stock. If he needs anymore incentive to stick around he_ll receive ANOTHER 100 million in stock if he stays in the job until 2019 Not a bad payday EIla considering he_s only been CEO since AUGUSTThat_s a pretty hard number for people to swallow including me. Whitney the Russian soccer team could be facing sanctions thanks to the bad behavior of its fans. Following Saturday_s match against England Russian supporters charged and attacked a section of English spectators. This followed several days of fighting in the streets of Marseille by fans of the teams. The Union of European Football Associations is also looking into allegations of racist behavior and the use of fireworks by the Russians. A decision on sanctions is scheduled for Tuesday. Fines are expected and there_s a possibility of disqualification looming if the violence continues. A home-made bomb went off at one of China_s busiest airports over the weekend. Four people were injured at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai on Sunday. According to police a 29-year-old man filled a beer bottle with explosives and threw it near the check-in counters. He then took a knife and attempted suicide. He_s currently in hospital in critical condition. And a controversial new study has some surprising findings about high cholesterol: it DOESN_T cause heart disease and might in fact be good for you The study involving 70 thousand people found that among those 60 and older WITH high cholesterol over 90 per cent lived as long or longer than those without. The team behind the study also suggested that cholesterol may in fact help fight other diseases including cancer That said the study has its share of critics. There are questions about the survey_s methodology and skeptics say that more dominant health factors among the elderly make the effects of cholesterol harder to track. So I_d say the jury is still out Whitney but maybe we don_t have to feel as bad when we_re eating eggsLucky for me I_m a vegan so I don_t really have to worry about it. Starting in 2013 he began expressing interest in returning to China for work and ended up leveraging information he got working at UTRC. And the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is running an investigation on Fiat Chrysler pickup trucks and SUVs They have received 43 complaints of roll-aways of vehicles in park contributing to at least 25 crashes and 9 injuries Models under review are 2013 to 2016 Ram 1500s and 2014 to 2016 Dodge Durango SUVs. Here_s Natasha with that story and MORE in a Naked News Bulletin. Carli on Wednesday the 44-year old Romanian pleaded guilty to identity theft and hacking charges. He was the man who hacked his way into the accounts of members of the Bush family and several other high-ranking US government officials including Secretary of State Colin Powell. Earlier this month he made headlines by claiming he_d broken into the private email server of Hillary Clinton though he was unable to backup those claims. Lazar faced 20 years behind bars but struck a plea deal with the Justice Department that will see him face no more than 7 years. In exchange he_s agreed to cooperate with authorities in the future. It appears Hulk Hogan had the help of a pretty powerful friend in his court case against Gawker Media Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel has admitted to secretly funding Hogan_s highly-publicized invasion of privacy lawsuit For weeks there had been rumors that Thiel had been backing the Hulkster in his lengthy battle against Gawker. The Paypal co-founder and Facebook board member has long been a target of the blog_s scathing media coverage. After having his sexuality outed by Gawker sub-site Valleywag in 2007 Thiel says he_s decided to help provide money to Gawker victims who normally wouldn_t be able to defend themselves. And the FBI is hoping to take a big bite out of crime and terrorism with a new low-tech weapon Iris the Labrador retriever has been trained to sniff out hard drives and other hidden electronic devices that can store information. As the agency_s first electronic-detection K9 Iris spent weeks in training. She_s now able to detect a chemical that_s used on all data storage devices. The feds say Iris will come in very handy for counter-terrorism investigations. Congrats guys In other news today a Canadian drug company is fighting off a proposed class action lawsuit for allegedly misleading consumers about the popular cold and flu remedy Cold FX. Valeant Pharmaceuticals advertised Cold-FX for the immediate relief of cold and flu symptoms if taken with the first 3 days of any symptoms. A complaint filed by a British Columbia man says that Valeant_s own research shows that product benefits will only be seen after 2 to 6 MONTHS of continued use. If the lawsuit goes ahead the company COULD be forced to refund anyone who has ever purchased the product And the fall out from the release of the Panama Papers continues Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson has resigned. Critics were calling for his removal after learning he_d failed to declare millions of dollars_ worth of investments held in an offshore account. On Tuesday the embattled politician stepped down as leader of the country_s coalition government. He_s hardly the only one facing intense public scrutiny. Authorities in dozens of countries have opened investigations due to allegations of financial wrongdoings. In Russia the Kremlin denied any involvement by President Vladimir Putin calling the reports lies aimed at discrediting the President before the country_s upcoming elections.
